Sometimes, inspiration comes from unexpected places. For me, it was a viral video of a couple's domestic dispute at a train station. While many found it amusing, I felt a deep sadness and a sense of empathy for those involved. That incident sparked a wave of emotions and ultimately led to the creation of my song, "I Don't Want to Hurt You."

I started thinking about the complexities of toxic relationships and what it would take for someone to finally break free, even as the aggressor. I imagined the internal struggle, the guilt, and the desire to escape the cycle of hurt. Those feelings poured out into the lyrics and melody of "I Don't Want to Hurt You."
The song captures the voice of someone who recognizes the damage they've caused and is finally ready to walk away, even if it means hurting the person they love. It's a raw and honest expression of regret, remorse, and the desperate need for change.
Here's a glimpse into the lyrics:
I don’t wanna hurt you for hurting me I don’t want to stay here one more night This time I ain’t gon fight I’m throwing up my hands I don’t want to hurt you for hurting me I broke your heart I lost myself in you I broke the best part of you Your blood is on my hands
Though it's a rough demo I recorded on my MacBook seven years ago, "I Don't Want to Hurt You" holds a special place in my heart. It was the first full song I wrote after my mentorship with David Porter of Made in Memphis Entertainment, and it marked a significant step in my songwriting journey.
I'm proud of the song's message and the emotional honesty it conveys. It's a reminder that even in the darkest of situations, there's always hope for change and a chance to break free from destructive patterns.
I don’t wanna hurt you for hurting me
I don’t want to stay here one more night
This time I ain’t gon fight
I’m throwing up my hands
I don’t want to hurt you for hurting me
I broke your heart I lost myself in you
I broke the best part of you
Your blood is on my hands
Don’t
Don’t you wake up tonight I won’t be by your side
I’ll get you out of my head
Don’t
Don’t you wake up tonight
I won’t be by your side
I’ll get you out of my head
I don’t want to hurt you (hurt you)
If I stay I’m bound to make you blue I’m bound to walk all over you
So take it as good news
I don’t want to hurt you (hurt you)
No longer love you I was such a fool I’m giving back every part of you You’re no longer mine to lose
Don’t (don't, don't, don't)
Don’t you put up a fight (don't don't don't)
This time I ain’t gon fight
I’m throwing up my hands
Don’t (don't don't don't)
Don’t you put up a fight (don't don't don't)
This time I ain’t gon fight
I’m throwing up my hands
I don’t want to hurt you
Here are previous versions of the demo with me tinkering away at a keyboard and thumping on my desk:
