Delta Nights, Smoked Delights, and Soulful Sounds: Hanging Out with Lionel "Jay" Johnson

There's something magical about the Mississippi Delta. The wide-open spaces, the rich soil, and the strong sense of community create a unique atmosphere. Recently, I had the pleasure of experiencing this firsthand during a visit to my classmate, Lionel "Jay" Johnson's, home deep in the heart of the boondocks.

Jay, or "Mouf-ful" as some might call him, embodies the spirit of the Delta. He's a successful entrepreneur, owning a smoked meat company, Mouf-ful, that churns out some of the most mouthwatering pulled pork you'll ever taste – and trust me, I know my BBQ! But more than that, he's a man of the land, a skilled hunter, and a talented musician.

On this particular night, Jay had invited two groups of friends over, creating a fascinating blend of personalities and passions. First, there were his hunting buddies – a group of hardworking, salt-of-the-earth Black husbands who, like Jay, know how to live off the land and provide for their families. They are resilient and self-sufficient, a powerful reminder of the deep connection between the people and the land in this part of the world.

Then, there were his musician friends. Jay has always had a deep love for music, and his knowledge is as vast as his hunting skills. Inside, the home was filled with laughter, conversation, and the smooth sounds of brown liquor and homemade concoctions. We shared stories, jokes, and even some surprisingly delicious deer steak (I'll admit, the idea took some getting used to!).

What struck me most about the evening was the sense of community and camaraderie. These were people who supported each other, lifted each other up, and celebrated each other's successes. Jay, in particular, is a shining example of this. He's a constant source of encouragement and inspiration, and I'm incredibly proud to call him my classmate and friend.

Spending time with Jay and his friends gave me so much hope for our people. It's a reminder that we are capable of achieving great things, building strong communities, and preserving our traditions. In the heart of the Mississippi Delta, amidst the wide-open spaces and the warmth of genuine friendship, I found a sense of belonging and a renewed appreciation for the power of community.

It's amazing to see a classmate thrive, and to know that we can always check in with each other, support one another, and grow together. That night in the boondocks of the Mississippi Delta was more than just a hangout; it was a reminder of the strength, resilience, and beauty of our community.
